sometimes you just gotta' row

missing an island

August, 2011 – 3rd week

We’ve been unable to anchor at Ambrym because surface conditions are unstable or, when we find shelter, the bottom is either too deep or coral. These islands are the product of a massive volcanic explosion and so coral grows around the volcanic deposit, plant life eventually finds enough dust and dirt deposit for shallow roots and the sea drops off into the abyss fifty meters away from shore. It creates spectacular lighting underwater; on the island side, the coral a bounty of hues and marine life while the abyss is a limitless spectrum…azure to indigo, seemingly center-lit by an unseen, mystical source.

So, on to Malakuala where the last documented act of cannibalism occurred in 1960.
