Now the rainman gave me two cures
Then he said, “Jump right in”
The one was Texas medicine
The other was just railroad gin

The antimalarial drug will help prevent malaria though not with certainty. Amongst its many potential side effects are depression and symptoms resembling decompression illness, the “bends”. But wait, I SCUBA dive regularly and around here many of the interesting dives start at decompression depths; it’s important to my survival to know if symptoms are the result of being “bent”.

Corporations that create and manufacturer pharmaceuticals are not, by any stretch of the imagination it must be remembered, involved in health care; they are in business to earn money for their shareholders. Mining companies are not in business to be kind to the planet, a cleaner Gulf of Mexico is not a mandate of BP, food conglomerates exist for profit, not to improve our children’s nutrition, etc.

Yes, there is more. Following a near-devastating bout of depression along with other horrific symptoms, the result of withdrawal side-effects courtesy of an Eli Lily concoction, the risk of malaria seems to pale in comparison. How weird is that?

An’ like a fool I mixed them
An’ it strangled up my mind
An’ now, people just get uglier
An’ I have no sense of time
