Knew a guy I used to know; well, I thought. Married for more than 30 years. Solid woman. Tolerated a lot. Kids are now grown and have left home to create their own. Good times with money and time have arrived…not so much.

Discovered. Rat in a stagnant sewer. Sleeping around and has brought the accompanying stew of lies, manipulation and deception into their respective lives. Yes, she was devastated.

After “leaving” the hard-earned, matrimonial premises, guy takes the girlfriend on a trip with one of his diminishing cluster of friends. Along the way it becomes apparent the guy has been seducing his friend’s girl. The trip was a preordained “opportunity”.

Yes, but karma walks silently and wears large boots and, while he’s back living with the wife, now jaded and scorned, his is a soul condemned. Dead center of Dante’s ninth.  Hers too probably.

Restraint is a required element of virtue.  Objects in the rear-view mirror are closer than they appear. Drop your consciousness-constructed guard at the wrong moment and count on the appearance of a little, Rubenesque demon of chaos, wings a-flapping at your psyche. In one blink an aura of joyful beginnings turns into dogshit. Friends and empathy fall like dominoes.

Sure, I’d like to remain neutral and objective. Hover in a lotus position, benign and unaffected above judgement. I look for a positive spin; I now know where they both stand in terms of characteristics important to me like loyalty and trust.

I’m gonna’ need some pious pixie dust however, because the notion of a virtuous response is overwhelmed by an urge to punch him in the face.

Yes, restraint.
